Lydney Harbour Regeneration - Lock Gates

Lydney Harbour is a listed site on a tributary of the River Severn. As part of the regeneration of the disused harbour, lock gates and flood defence gates needed to be restored and upgraded. The lock gates are needed to allow entrance to the marina from the fast flowing River Severn and the flood gates are needed to protect the surrounding Lydney area from exceptionally high spring tides.

Mandall Engineering Ltd were employed as a specialist sub consultant to prepare the exemplar design pre-contract award, this was carried out by David Price. David then worked for the main contractor during the construction phase and was responsible for the detailed structural, mechanical and electrical design.

Three sets of mechanised lock gates were fitted, including new automatically operated flood gates. The operation of the flood gates was unusual in that they were electrically operated using curved rack driven by a pinion gear rather than a hydraulic system. The design of the gates provided a robust, failsafe automatic system whilst meeting the requirements of English Heritage who jointly funded the project.

Due to its close proximity to the fast flowing River Severn, massive amounts of silt are deposited in the harbour on every tide.
