Dover Walkway Cat 3 Checks

Eadon Consulting were approached by Tony Gee & Partners to complete Category 3 checks on the design of steel walkway platforms and staircases at the Port of Dover. The project involved the provision of walkways to allow dock workers access between the decks of the moving link spans and replace existing ladders making access safer.

The Port is Europe’s busiest ferry port, and a vital international gateway for the movement of passengers and trade. It is also an award-winning cruise port, one of the busiest in the UK and hosts some of the world’s most prestigious cruise lines.

Eadon Consulting started work in the spring of 2016 using STAAD Pro structural analysis software and hand calculations to assess both the platforms and staircases to relevant Eurocodes. Eadon engineers began by checking the walkway gantries. Fabricated in steel, the gantries are fixed to concrete piers and the link span decks with articulated connections to allow for movement of the link spans.

Once these checks were completed, focus then turned to the staircases which enabled access to the platforms.
