Galway Horizontal Directional Drilling

Eadon Consulting have a long history of working alongside Stockton Drilling. Initially approached to assist with the project tender in the spring of 2015 our team went on to begin design work for the project a year later.

Eadon Consulting were tasked with providing the design of a horizontal directional drill crossing which was needed to carry a power cable under the River Corrib and alongside the remains of a historic local castle in Galway, Ireland.

The project involved the installation of a 390 metre HDPE pipe-bundle beneath the River, with the aim of completing a 110kV grid connection to the SSE wind park west of Galway city. Several factors, including ongoing activities at the nearby National University campus and the ruins of the medieval castle - resulted in the project presenting an array of logistically and technically challenging aspects. Working on the edge of what was geometrically possible, Eadon engineers needed to ensure that a feasible drill profile could be established as well as ensuring they simultaneously completed an additional design for a drill hole that had the capacity to house a mud return line.

As well as the design of the HDD (Horizontal directional drilling) profile we also assisted with the site layout and HDD rig anchor in addition to providing as-built drawings for the project.

The project was successfully completed in June 2016. Our ability to rapidly amend the design with evolving requirements allowed the project to proceed quickly minimising extra cost and additional workload for the client.
