ROV Lifting Frame Analysis
||Seadrift Precision Engineering Ltd
Seadrift Precision Engineering supply and support a wide range Offshore and Sub sea equipment. One of their main products are ROV deployment systems mounted on board ship decks. These are hydraulically operated, extending boom A frames that are able to lift the ROV directly from an integral skid base into the water.
The frames are fabricated from high strength steel plate with the side arms having a number of mortise and tennon style welded connections. In order to verify the design of these connections in detail, Eadon Consulting were asked to carry out a finite element analysis of the arm and specifically the special joints.
Working closely with Seadrift, a model of the arm was created using their existing CAD data. This was then analysed using a number of load cases to take account of the various pitch and roll conditions of the ship. The analysis showed that the stresses around the welds were significantly lower than that of the material yield stress even in the worst loading conditions.
