Media City Swing Bridge
The exemplar mechanical, electrical, control and hydraulic design and specification of the Media City Swing bridge was carried out by M G Bennett and Associates Ltd. Whilst employed by Bennetts, Michael Thorogood was responsible for the detailed exemplar design and specification of the mechanical, electrical, control and hydraulic elements.
As part of the development of Media City in Salford - soon to become home to several departments of the BBC - a swing bridge was required to provide a pedestrian and cycle link between areas of the development. The bridge is required to move to allow navigation of the Manchester Ship Canal.
The additional members of the design team were the structural consultant Gifford & Partners LLP and the architect Wilkinson Eyre. Various options and designs were investigated and presented to the client. From this a design was selected for development to tender stage.
The final design is a 83m long bridge consisting of a nose span of 65m with a tail span of 18m. In order to allow the passage of vessels, the bridge rotates about a vertical axis through 71 degrees.
