Clarence Dock Bascule Bridges

Location: Royal Armouries, Leeds

The detailed mechanical design and specification of the electrical, control and hydraulic systems was carried out by M G Bennett and Associates Ltd on behalf of C. Spencer. Whilst employed by Bennetts, Michael Thorogood was responsible for the detailed mechanical and structural design of two pedestrian lift bridges, one with a single lifting span and one with two lifting spans. Additionally he was also responsible for the authoring, testing and commissioning of the control software for both bridges.

As part of the redevelopment of the canal basin at the Royal Armouries, Leeds, two pedestrian bridges were required to improve connections between sections of the basin.

The single lifting span has a length of 16m and the twin lifting spans are 12m each.

The bridges were designed in consultation with British Waterways and designed in accordance with their design standards. The hydraulic power packs were designed so that they fit beneath a bench, allowing excellent access to all sides of the power pack for maintenance and inspection.
