2009 – Director and Senior Engineer, Eadon Consulting

Netham Lock Gates, Feeder Canal, Bristol. Structural Timber Design of two pairs of mitre lock gates to Eurocode 5, BS EN 1995-2. Client: Bristol City Council.

Killaloe Flow Control Gates, Killaloe Canal, Ireland. Structural steelwork and mechanical design of mitre weir gates designed to open against a head of 400mm. Client: Waterways Ireland.

Steam Pipe Bridge Cladding, Birmingham. Category 3 check of stainless steel bridge cladding system over Network Rail line. Client: University of Birmingham.

Humber Bridge Main Cable Dehumidification, Barton upon Humber – Hessel. Structural and mechanical design of 28m long mobile gantries to traverse up the main suspension cable. – Client: Humber Bridge Board.

Carter House Swing Bridge, Runcorn. Design of 15m swing bridge structure to BS5400-3 and slewing mechanism. Client Halton Borough Council.

Forth Road Bridge Dropped Object Canopy, Queensferry. Temporary works design and erection sequence for outer canopy erection at North Tower – Client: Forth Estuary Transport Authority

Nuclear Lift Crane Structural Viability Calculations. Assesment of feasibility of five crane structures for nuclear handling application – Client SCX Ltd.

Forth Road Bridge Access Platforms, Detailed design of bespoke temporary access platform in aluminium – Client: Forth Estuary Transport Authority

Brighton Stadium Spherical Bearing Check, Independent design check of two 1700 tonne spherical bearings – Client Brighton & Hove Albion FC

Copenhagen Harbour Bascule Bridge, Outline design of the mechanism for a 50m bascule bridge for a Danish design competition – Client City of Copenhagen

Humber Bridge High Level Platforms, Category 3 check of three 14 tonne main cable inspection platforms. Footway capacity checks for various load cases. Client – Humber Bridge Board

Junction Lock Bridge Bristol, working as sub-consultant to Atkins Bennett on the continuation of design of mechanical equipment for a 650 tonne existing swing bridge built in 1925. Client – Bristol City Council

Forth Road Bridge Dropped Object Canopy, Queensferry. Preliminary design of temporary works and dismantling sequence for outer canopies – Client: Forth Estuary Transport Authority

Junction Lock Bridge, Bristol. Design of mechanical equipment for the M&E refurbishment of a 650 tonne existing swing bridge built in 1925. Client – Bristol City Council

6m Tunnel Boring Machine Backup, China. Design of 60m long backup machinery supporting 6m diameter tunnelling machine.

Cathedral Green Bridge, Derby. Design of mechanical, hydraulic and electrical works for 58m long swing bridge. Client – Derby City Council.

M48 Severn Bridge Main Cable Dehumidification, Aust, Structural and mechanical design of 28m long mobile gantries to traverse up the main suspension cable – Client: Severn River Crossing Plc.

Forth Road Bridge Main Cable Dehumidification, Queensferry. Structural and mechanical design of 28m long mobile gantries to traverse up the main cable. – Client: Forth Estuary Transport Authority.

10m Tunnel Boring Machine Backup, India. Design of 100m long backup machinery supporting 10m diameter tunnelling machine.


1998 – 2006, Engineering Manager, Mandall Engineering

Swansea Point Swingbridge, Swansea. Working for Quadrant Consulting as specialist subcontractor, carried out the preliminary design and submitted the structural and M&E AIP’s for a 30m long swing bridge.

Neath Canal Locks, Neath. Designed and project managed the contract for installing nine sets of traditional timber lock gates for the refurbishment of Neath Canal. Client – Neath Canal Trust.

City Mill Lock, London. Designed all the structural and mechanical equipment and project managed the contract for the installation of three sets of mechanised lock gates. Client – British Waterways.

Maud Foster Sluice, Boston. Working as Principle Contractor, managed the contract and designed three sets of timber flood defence gates for the refurbishment of the sluice structure. Client – Environment Agency.

Manual Swing bridges, Various. Design responsibility for the mechanical equipment and managed the projects to install four manual operation swing bridges. Client - British Waterways.

Lydney Harbour Regeneration, Lydney. The project was sponsored by English Heritage. Carried out detailed design for the structural and mechanical equipment for fully mechanised Sea Gates, Lock Gates and Flood Gates, as well as managing the whole project through to commissioning including subcontracting the electrical works. Client – Environment Agency.

Lydney Harbour Regeneration, Lydney. Worked as specialist sub-consultant to Babtie Brown & Root and provided the outline design and structural and M&E specification for the tender package for the project described above. Client – Environment Agency

New Islington Bascule Bridge, Manchester. Managed the project through manufacture to installation of the 10m pedestrian bascule bridge. Client - British Waterways

Deganwy Marina Tidal Gate, North Wales.The scheme consisted a 20m x 3.5m cill gate, operated by gate buoyancy. Carried out the design of the closed circuit pumping system and managed the structural, mechanical and electrical works. Client – Deganwy Quay Marina

St Andrews Bascule Bridge, St Andrews. This design and build project was for a hydraulically powered, timber, double leaf bascule bridge, spanning 10m. Carried out the structural and mechanical design and supervised the engineer managing the project. Client –British Waterways

Bradley Swing Bridge, North Yorkshire.The works consisted of an 18m single carriage fully automated swing bridge, including mechanical, electrical and hydraulic works. Responsible for the design of the mechanical equipment as well as the project management of the whole structural, mechanical, electrical and hydraulic package. Client – British Waterways

Bells and Glovers Swing Bridges, Ormskirk. The works consisted of two 13m single carriage swing bridges. Managed the mechanical, electrical and hydraulic works. Client – British Waterways

The Deep Millennium Project Footbridges, Hull. The works consisted of 135m of fully fabricated pedestrian bridge sections for which managed the contract. Client – Hull City Council

Goole Caisson, Goole. Design of steel fabricated canal breach protection gates with damping system and included full automation and CCTV for remote operation. Client – British Waterways

Brewery Swing Bridge, Skipton. The works consisted of a 12m single carriage semi-automated swing bridge, including mechanical, electrical and hydraulic works. Client – British Waterways

Grangemouth Lock, Falkirk. Designed all the equipment and managed the structural, mechanical, hydraulic and electrical works for a brand new fully automated lock gate system for the reopening of the Forth & Clyde Canal, Millennium Link Project. Client – British Waterways

Dalmuir Drop Lock, Clydebank. The scheme created the world’s first Drop Lock, an automated locking system for canal boats ‘crossing the road’. Designed all the structural and mechanical equipment and managed the structural, M&E and hydraulic works. Client – British Waterways

Conwy Marina Tidal Gate, Conwy. Similar to the Deganwy project described above. Designed the pumping system and worked closely with Robert West Consulting to overcome the teething problems on the first gate of its kind, using buoyancy for opening and closing. Client – Quay Marinas

Naburn Lock Mechanisation, York. Acted as principle contractor responsible for civil, mechanical, hydraulic and electrical works including design for the mechanisation of a listed lock structure.
